Abstract

The mythographer Ptolemy Chennus (Phot. Bibl. 190) wrote a strange work full of fictive stories and among these are several anecdotes of ancient sport. Ptolemy was another Graeco-Roman intellectual who in the Roman Empire revalued the Greek past, including physical education and sports, because they were part of the paideía and an operator of Greek identity at least until Hellenistic times.
