Abstract

Miguel de Unamuno approaches in his poetry and his philosophy the figure of Prometheus and makes use of the rich symbolism of the myth. Unamuno identifies himself with a Prometheus that embodies human awareness and its yearning for knowledge and immortality, and, at the same time, with a hungry entrails-eating vulture which symbolizes reason and the impossibility of believing in a conscious immortality. A dialectic is thus created between both figures which stands for the author’s own personal drama.
