Abstract

The well-known Eryximachus’ speech in Plato’s Convivium about the relationships between love and medicine has been variously interpreted by the commentators. As he presents, in regard with medicine, a whole cosmology, his ideas were compared with those of the Pythagoreans, or Alcmaeon, or Heraclitus, or naturally with Empedocles, but it is not clear whether Eryximachus admits the principle of the opposites or that of the similars. Eryximachus’ position, and perhaps Plato’s thought in this epoch depend on this question.
