Abstract

The manuscript MS 580 of the National Library of Portugal contains numerous Indian and Southeast Asian words that were assimilated into the Spanish language from Portuguese during the 16th and 17th centuries. Despite limited studies regarding indigenous terms from the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia in Portuguese within the Spanish language, their significant presence in the manuscript is worthy of additional research. The data was analysed by searching for references in etymological and historical dictionaries of Portuguese and Spanish to comprehend their meaning, evolution, and continuity in the Spanish language. Despite being limited to a single manuscript, this study aims to highlight two points. Firstly, it sheds light on the presence of Spaniards in Asian territories administered by Portugal. Secondly, it highlights the substantial impact of Portuguese words in the Spanish language.
