Atlas ὁλοόφρων and Stoic Providence: A Cleanthes’ Amendment
Abstract
In this paper I want to explore Cleanthes’ reason to justify the orthographical and hence interpretative amendment of Homeric noun ὀλοόφρων (Od. 1, 52) that works like an epithet for the titan Atlas. The Stoic philosopher pretends, by correcting the initial aspiration of the noun, making the titan an agent of providence, precisely as a divinity who bears comprehension of the entire universe, however, there is no mythological information by which such an orthographic change could be demonstrated. Even though, some elements from Stoic philosophy, regardless allegorical and etymological means that explain mythical nature, can bring into light Cleanthes’ intention.
