The methodological problem in exegesis of ancient philosophy sources: a case study

Abstract

This article focuses on the methodological problem facing the historian of Ancient Philosophy. Which method to follow when constructing a serious, rigorous exegesis is often not clear, especially when we find an apparent contradiction in the meaning of different passages by the same author. In these cases, the image we have of the author may guide in advance the way we read the texts, filtering the meaning of key concepts. Here we approach the question of methodology from one possible angle, with special care and particular relevance given to the structural-semantic study of the lexis. A case study based on De Mysteriis of Iamblichus is used here as an example.
