The beginnings of a never-ending debate: the origin of Elysium in ancient scholarship
Abstract
From the XIXth century on, there has been an extensive debate about Elysium, focused on a fundamental issue: its origin. Still today, the discussion remains wide open, although many explanations have been offered and most of the leading experts have had their say. Our primary objective is to expose that the issue was already addressed by Greek and Roman scholarship. By collecting and studying all extant remains, we attempt to reconstruct the main aspects of the discussion; researchers, methods, explanations. The study is intended to highlight the multiple conexions between both debates, ancient and modern.Downloads
