Epicurus’ Κανών in the Letter to Herodotus
Abstract
In the following article we discuss the concepts related to the epicurean Canon that appear in the Epistle to Herodotus with special attention to their order of appearance in the letter, to the links between sensation, prenotion and affection, as well as the distinction between the organ of mental perception (διανοία) and the result of such activity (πρόληψις), a crucial concept for the construction of abstract reasoning. In this context, the comprehensive function of ἐπιβολή is re-assessed at all cognitive levels. With the present remarks we also try to explain whether the φανταστικὴ ἐπιβολὴ τῆς διανοίας really implies an additional criterion or an equivalent expression for a criterion of knowledge that is already present in nuce in the Epistle to Herodotus.Downloads
