About Sofocles’ Κρῆτες
Abstract
We study a particular play attributed to Sophocles, named Κρῆτες (Cretans), a tragedy only known by two very dubious quotations by Hesychius and Athenaeus of Naucratis. By the end of the xviiith century, a new interpretation related both of them to another tragedy, and seemed to deny the proper existence of the play. Although the title keeps on appearing in the editions of the Sophoclean works, nowadays linked with papyrus fragments. The aim of this paper is to analyze deeply the sources to conclude if this play was written or not.Downloads
