Abstract

Private epitaphs are an interesting source of information to understand the ideas of the ancient Greeks on soul and its destiny after death. The fourth century B.C. is an important point of infl ection on this complex subject. As the historical perspective is essential in this kind of studies, we refl ect on these pages about two epigraphic texts from this period, so far overlooked, that show the ways in which in the fourth century BC there is no normative thought on this subject. Similarlily, expressions alluding to the separation of soul and body, frequent in later times, had not yet become cliché.
