Political "theoria" and "praxis" in Herodotus
Abstract
The main goal of my research (historia) is to make clear the intrinsic relationship between the thoughts (theoriai) of the characters and Herodotus’ own about different “forms of political rule” (also called, as we shall see, pragmata), and the ways of acting (praxeis) present in the Histories. As a result of a detailed analysis of chapters 80-82 of Book III and of the dialogue between these theories and several episodes of political action, we realize that already in Herodotus we can fi nd the logical background of some of the arguments present in Plato’s Statesman (in my opinion, among the works of Plato, the closest to the text of our author). Both works have common goals: to defi ne categories today still diffi cult to delineate and generating controversy, i.e. the politician and the regimes in which he operates.Downloads
