Abstract

Chromosome numbers and karyotypes of three species and a hybrid of the genus Canna growing in Argentina, and also distributed in the Neotrópico, were investigated here. Chromosome counts were performed in C. indica, C. fuchsina, C. coccinea and the hybrid C. x generalis with the conventional chromosomal stain techniques.

All studied taxa proved to be diploid (2n = 18). Three species showed similar symmetric karyotypes, with mainly metacentric small and short chromosomes, though some submetacentric chromosome pairs were observed. Fluorescent DAPI chromosome banding technique was applied on interphases and mitotic metaphases of C. coccinea and C. fuchsina, this procedure for the first time in the genus, with the aim to detect the presence of regions of constitutive heterochromatin rich in Adenine-Thymine (A-T). The results obtained allowed the recognition of chromosomal pairs and demonstrated the usefulness of this method to detecting the interspecific variation in the chromosomal distribution of A-T rich heterochromatin in Canna. The diploid number 2n=18 found in the studied material of C. x generalis does not contradicts the hypothesis on its origin, since this chromosome count coincide with the present in one of the progenitors, C. indica, and is also known for other parental species.
