Abstract

How does the notion of Flesh allow us to understand the intellectual relation between Foucault and Merleau-Ponty? Like Merleau-Ponty, Foucault conceives Flesh in a way that could be explained in terms of “chiasmus”. However, Foucault’s conception of Flesh constitutes a non-ontological chiasmus which illustrates the dynamics through which subjectivity is both constituted and constitutes itself in history. Consequently, Flesh becomes a key notion to understand the evolution of Foucault’s critique of Merleau-Ponty’s account of subjectivity since Phénoménologie et psychologie
