Spatial dynamics of horticulture in the northern and central oases of Mendoza, Argentina
Abstract
The visibility of food in large cities has put their rural peripheries in the spotlight. Faced with the threat of urban advance, horticultural production must often relocate to more distant areas. However, under this first approach, other typical phenomena of capitalist development in agriculture remain hidden. This work investigates the spatial dynamics of the horticultural production of Mendoza, taking into account, in addition, the reconfigurations that they imply on production and its subjects. For this we resort to a combination of techniques that include statistical data analysis, documentary analysis and indepth interviews. The conclusions include a combined phenomenon of displacement of horticulture towards areas of the agrarian frontier and concentration of production in favor of medium and large companies specialized in the production of heavy vegetables.
