"Dactylopius opuntiae" vs. "Opuntia ficus-indica" in Spain: spatial and temporal analysis and landscape impact evaluation through on-line media
Abstract
The increasing introduction of alien invasive species is an important factor of ecological, landscape and social transformation. In this sense, the effect of certain invertebrate herbivores on vegetation is especially significant. In this research an analysis is carried out of the geographical distribution and the landscape impact of the wild cochineal (Dactylopius opuntiae) which is affecting the prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) in Spain. The study is developed through the analysis of on-line media. The results show, for the first time, the social and spatial significance of this insect and also demonstrate the dissociation between the management by the public administration and the aspirations of the citizens.Downloads
