Towards Sustainable Tourism Development in El Tarf: Mapping Suitability through GIS and AHP
Abstract
The region of El Tarf boasts a rich array of natural, geographical, and historical tourist features, including mountainous areas, coastal zones, as well as diverse tourist sites and potentials. This study aims to assess tourist suitability zones in the region, notably taking into account the El Kala National Park, classified and preserved by UNESCO-MAB. To achieve this, we employed a Geographic Information System (GIS) to map land suitability for tourism, considering multiple criteria and factors, including landscape (land use), topography (elevation, slope), and accessibility (proximity to tourist sites and services, distance from roads). Each factor was evaluated on a relevance scale ranging from highly suitable (10) to not suitable for tourism (1). The results obtained provide a detailed mapping of the region's tourist potential, thus facilitating the planning and management of local tourism development.
