Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • Submitting an article to this journal implies the acceptance of the Declaration of Originality and Authorship.

  • The format of the file sent is OpenOffice or Microsoft Word.

  • In-text citations and bibliographic references comply with the provisions of the seventh (7th) edition of the APA guidelines (2019).

  • Web addresses and DOIs have been added to the references where possible.

  • In the case of articles, an anonymized version of the manuscript is provided. This can be ensured by following the instructions indicated in Ensuring a Blind Review.
  • In the case of articles, a cover letter of a maximum of 400 words is included, justifying the contribution and originality of the manuscript and proposing at least three potential reviewers, with justification of their expertise.

Author Guidelines

1. Journal sections

Each volume of the journal consists of a miscellaneous section of articles and may also include a monographic section of articles, a research notes section, and a book reviews section.

On an exceptional basis, the journal may propose to Ediciones Complutense the publication of a special volume as a monographic section of articles.

2. Publication format

The journal is published in digital format and is accessible through its website.

3. Publication frequency

The journal publishes at least one (1) issue per year, consisting of two (2) volumes. The volumes are published in different months.

Independently of the publication of each volume, accepted manuscripts for which the entire editorial process has been completed will be published online in advance. A DOI will be assigned to each article published online. Once publication of the volume to which the article has been assigned is completed, the corresponding issue number, volume, and page numbers will be assigned.

4. Nature of the contributions

Contributions to the journal may take the form of articles, research notes, or reviews. They must be original, unpublished works that have not been submitted to other publication outlets and that analyze or interpret geographic space, considering territorial structures and processes.

Submission of a manuscript implies that its publication has been approved by all co-authors (if any) and by the responsible authorities of the institution where the work was carried out. The Editorial Board assumes no legal responsibility in the event of claims for compensation.

Once a manuscript has been received, it may not be submitted to other publications unless the authors formally request its withdrawal in writing and only with the prior and explicit consent of the journal’s editorial management.

5. Language of the manuscripts

Manuscripts may be written in Spanish or English. However, the title, abstract, and keywords must be provided in both languages.

The publication of a translated version of an accepted manuscript within the same volume of the journal will be permitted. In the event of discrepancies between versions, the version submitted for the evaluation process shall prevail.

6. Length of manuscripts.

Articles must be between 4,000 and 8,000 words in length. Research must not exceed 3,000 words, and reviews are limited to 2,000 words.

In exceptional and duly justified cases, the Editorial Board may accept manuscripts that exceed these limits.

7. Structure of the manuscripts.

Published manuscripts must follow the structure outlined below. Use of the journal’s template is required:

  1. Title
  2. Authorship, affiliation, and email address
  3. Abstract
  4. Keywords
  5. Main body of the text
  6. Acknowledgements
  7. Declaration of interests
  8. Author contributions
  9. References

8. Manuscript submission procedure

Manuscripts must be submitted online through the journal’s OJS editorial management platform (Enviar un nuevo envío). Authors must include the following files with their submission:

Title page

Title

The title must not contain abbreviations, notes, or calls. It must be written in both Spanish and English..

Authorship information

Full name of each author, institutional affiliation, email address, and 16-digit ORCID identifier (if available).

Abstract

A text of no more than 250 words describing the objective, methodology, and results of the manuscript, without footnotes. The abstract must be written in both Spanish and English..

Keywords

A minimum of three (3) and a maximum of six (6) keywords, avoiding overly general terms to facilitate indexing. Keywords must be provided in both Spanish and English.

Acknowledgements and declaration of interests

Reference to any external funding (public or private) received for the work and to any potential conflicts of interest.

Author contributions

In the case of multiple authorship, a description of the tasks performed by each author according to the CRediT taxonomy (Contributor Roles Taxonomy).

Anonymized manuscript

An anonymized version of the manuscript must be submitted to ensure the integrity of the double-blind peer review process. The manuscript must not contain any information that could reveal authorship, including personal data, acknowledgements, or funding sources. In addition, author identity must be removed from the document properties.

The manuscript must comply with the journal’s style and publication guidelines. To this end, authors must use the provided template. It details all publication rules and recommendations.

Headings

The manuscript must be divided into clearly defined and properly numbered sections and subsections. Numbering should use Arabic numerals with up to three levels: one digit for sections, two for subsections, and three for sub-subsections (e.g., 1., 1.1., and 1.1.1., respectively).

Abbreviations

Abbreviations must be defined at first mention and used consistently thereafter.

Footnotes

Footnotes are only permitted exceptionally in duly justified cases and must be numbered consecutively.

Tables

Tables must appear in the appropriate place within the body of the text. They must be numbered consecutively according to their order of appearance using Arabic numerals (Table 1, etc.) and referenced accordingly in the text. Each table must include a title and, when required, the original source.

Figures (maps, charts, photographs)

Figures must be inserted in the appropriate place within the body of the text. They must be numbered consecutively according to their order of appearance using Arabic numerals (Figure 1, etc.) and referenced accordingly in the text. Titles must appear above the figures, always indicating their source at the bottom.

Figures must be suitable for clear visualization in the final published version. To ensure quality, authors may be required to submit figures in one of the following formats:

  • Vector figures: e.g., EPS (vector format) with a minimum resolution of 1,000 dpi.
  • Images: e.g., TIFF, JPG, or PNG, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.

In-text citations and references

In-text citations and references must follow the guidelines set out in the seventh (7th) edition of the APA style manual (2019).

Whenever possible, DOIs or permanent identifiers must be included for all cited references.

Copyright permissions

Authors wishing to include previously published figures, tables, or text excerpts must obtain permission from the copyright holders. This permission must be submitted together with the manuscript. Any material received without evidence of such permission will be assumed to be original work by the authors.

Cover letter to the journal editors

A cover letter addressed to the Editor-in-Chief must be included. The letter should justify the contribution and originality of the manuscript, contextualize it within the authors’ scientific output, and propose a minimum of three (3) potential reviewers. The letter must not exceed 400 words.

8. Peer review procedure

The journal uses a double-blind peer review system. Each article is sent to at least two (2) external experts in the subject matter, who anonymously evaluate the manuscript and submit their reports to the Editorial Board.

Based on the external reviewers’ reports, the Editorial Board will decide whether to reject the manuscript, request revisions, or accept it for publication. The decision will be consistent with the formal, original, and unpublished nature of the work, as well as its content, quality, and suitability for the journal.

Once the Editorial Board has reached a decision, it will be communicated to the authors as soon as possible.

9. Copyright and authors’ rights

The journal Anales de Geografía, in order to promote the global exchange of knowledge, provides unrestricted access to its contents from the moment of publication in its electronic edition and is therefore an open-access journal. The works published in this journal are the property of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and proper attribution is mandatory in any total or partial reproduction. All contents are distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) license. This condition must be expressly stated whenever necessary.
