(anti)Racism and the Role of the Traditional Woman in Siete Martes (2021) by El Chojin
Abstract
Siete martes (2021)is the last and most ambitious novel of the Spanish hip-hop singer El Chojin. The novel describes the life of two people in their thirties who meet through a mutual friend. Edú, a black psychologist, treats the story’s other protagonist. Carol, a victim of both sexual abuse and sexism, attends Edú’s clinic in order to escape a toxic romantic relationship with her boyfriend, Richie. The principal characters represent varieties of racism and sexism in today’s Spanish society through their experiences and their responses to those experiences. The novel explores the complexities of stereotypes, assumptions, and gendered ignorance. My analysis, grounded on the novel’s specifics, delves into the destructive consequences of traditional social norms regarding femininity in Spain today and, by implication, in much of the world.
