The concession, a necessary evil?

Keywords: psychomechanics of language, lexical semantics, grammatical semantics, grammatical concession

Abstract

This contribution examines the expression of the concessive relationship in French from a lexical perspective: how can we explain that the same semantic-logical relationship is translated by two major constructions (bien que p, q and malgré p, q), structured around two linguistic tools (a conjunctive phrase and a preposition) that include two antonymic lexical constituents: bien and mal? The answer, which to some extent challenges this initial approach of an intrinsically antonymic relationship, relies on a hypothesis of lexical-grammatical semantics of a scalar nature, largely inspired by the psychomechanics of language.
