Abstract
- Because of his criticism of civilisation and rationalism, while pleading for a human ideal closer to nature, it is justified to consider Jean-Jacques Rousseau a precursor of romanticism; nevertheless, his attitude towards women's liberation remains controversial. In Julie ou La Nouvelle Héloïse, he defends the emotional freedom of his heroine against social conventions, but in Émile ou De l'éducation he becomes the spokesman of a very conservative concept of women's behaviour. This essay sets out to analyse Rousseau's influence on the works of the feminist writer George Sand, in order to establish where she adopts the ideas of her predecessor and where she goes her own way.Downloads
