Proverb and Analogy
Abstract
Within the framework of argumentative linguistics and cognitive linguistics, this paper aims to systematically analyze the heterogeneous phenomena of analogy in the proverbial field, from both theoretical and applied point of view. Using the analogy, we justify the denominative capacity of the proverb through both referential and categorical arguments. Based on the five main functions of analogy: categorizing, regularizing, figurative, discursive and paraphrastic, we illustrate how analogy participates in the syntactic, semantic and prosodic arrangements of the proverb. The analogy, a central human cognitive process; the proverb, a culturally and linguistically condensed formula, their application in language didactics allows for a better understanding of the conceptual metaphors shared in French and Chinese cultures, as well as the figures of speech based on analogy common to both languages.
