Abstract

This text deals with the writing of the Prophecies found in The Ballad of the Wise Merlin from 1535 and the Prophecies uttered by Fanimor, a character from the First Chronicle of Portuguese Chivalry, the Chronicle of Emperor Clarimundoby João de Barros from 1522. To do so, we will attempt to analyze the possible ideological meanings of each of them, also considering other older prophecies, those that are part of a 14th-century testimony in the Suite of the Book of Merlin. Using a comparative methodology, our goal will be to assess the representations of royalty in both texts.
