«A génese da alma portuguesa». Some similarities between the Crónica do Imperador Clarimundo and the Ciclo de D. Belindo
Abstract
Despite the founding role of the Crónica do Imperador Clarimundo (1522) and its great popularity in Portugal during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, no direct reference to this book (published by the historian João de Barros in his youth) has been found in the Crónica do Imperador Beliandro (or Ciclo de D. Belindo), another chivalric romance whose first two parts were written by the Countess of Vidigueira, D. Leonor Coutinho de Távora (†1648). Nevertheless, in this work I propose an exploration of some similarities and shared key moments between João de Barros’s Clarimundo and the Ciclo de Belindo, the first and one of the last books of chivalry written in Portuguese.
