El Diccionario castellano, francés y catalán (1642) de Pere Lacavallería: indicios de una política lingüística en el siglo XVII*

Abstract

The Spanish, French and Catalan Dictionary, wrongly ascribed to Marcos Fernández, was published for the first time in 1642 in Barcelona by the French printer Pere Lacavallería, and is the only linguistic work in that century which connects all three languages and the only which relates Spanish and Catalan. Its remarkable character is reinforced by the fact that the book was publishing during the war known as War of the Reapers, which caused a temporary independence from Castille by Catalonia; in addition, the book is addressed to the French viceroy, who gives a printing privilege written in Catalan, maybe an instance of political promotion of this language. In order to check whether printing privileges were usually written in Catalan at the time, several imprints of the time published in Barcelona have been collated, for we have almost none bibliographical studies at our disposal which could answer our question.
