Abstract

This article compiles information about the semantic content of the word pobo in the three major phases of the history of the Galician language. Special attention is paid to the emergence and extension of the innovation consisting of using the word to designate a population entity. I conclude that this innovation penetrated medieval Galician through translations of texts that were written in Castillian, spread among Galician scholars in the later phase and became generalized from the 19th century onwards. Nowadays, the purist condemnation that current standardizing institutions have launched against this use is operating more efficiently in those genres less influenced by the demands of immediacy (fiction or essay) than in those that do suffer from these demands (journalism or radio programs).
