«Tan agena de consuelo»: a ballad in the ms. II-1579 of Madrid’s Real Biblioteca
Abstract
This study rescues from oblivion an anonymous Marian poem preserved in the factitious manuscript II-1579 of Madrid’s Real Biblioteca («Tan agena de consuelo») which has a singular, and never detected, relationship with one of the text included in the Cancionero Musical de Palacio («Está la Reina del cielo»). In addition to editing the romance and investigating its relationship with the version set to music, we propose some hypotheses about its composition and its link to the devotional environment of the late 15th and early 16th centuries, as a further example of the dissemination of the Stabat Mater dolorosa motif in the medieval poetic tradition.
