Ausculting the Middle Ages: a working philologist’s perspective
Abstract
The article reports and reflects on the aims of the Universo Cantigas project (https://universocantigas.gal) and the criteria used for the creation of a critical online edition of the corpus of secular medieval Galician-Portuguese lyrical poetry. The analysis examines the principles of palaeographical transcription used and explains the challenge faced in critical editing projects of this type of reconstructing the source text as faithfully as possible to that of its author. Finally, the paper responds to criticism from some scholars regarding the methodological principles on which the new edition of the corpus is based.
