Transgressing water boundaries in Gui de Warewic: Space representation and generic intertextuality
Abstract
This article focuses on the study of generic intertextuality in Gui de Warewic (13th century), based on the examination of three episodes involving the transgression of a watercourse. To this purpose, it firstly draws on an epic corpus, based on which a sequence of motifs usually associated with the crossing of watercourses in chansons de geste is systematized. The impact of the epic patterning over the first two episodes is then established. Finally, the third episode is addressed, in order to show how this generic frame is temporarily subverted as a result of the intersection of the epic sequence with a romance intertext. The article concludes that the Gui-poet grounds his literary experimentation upon generic variance, a procedure which requires an acute awareness of genre, both at the thematic and at the formal level.
