Litany and poetry in the "Cancionero de Baena": the case of Alfonso Álvarez de Villasandino
Abstract
A great part of the poems by Alfonso Álvarez de Villasandino, compiled in the Cancionero de Baena, are inspired by the religious tradition. The author not only appeals in them to the sacred subject and boasts of his knowledge of the biblical passages but also makes use of the formulas originating from the liturgical prayers such as hymns and litanies. The aim of our work is the analysis of his religious, love, eulogy and lamenting cantigas and decires in order to detect in them the constituent elements of the “litanic verse”, a concept proposed by the Polish philologist Witold Sadowski, and determine the roles that they play within these compositions.
