Abstract

The aim of this paper is to study the enigmatic writing style of Heraclitus of Ephesus, taking into account the riddle tradition in Ancient Greece. I will compare some of his aphorisms with the riddles composed by Cleobuline of Rhodes to show that they have a similar function: to hide the obvious using different linguistic strategies in order to extend both the knowledge about the world and self-knowledge.
