Child poverty and its relationship to housing in Spain

Keywords: chilhood, residential vulnerability, housing rights, child poverty

Abstract

The current housing situation has led to an increase in housing distress across Europe, but most notably in Spain. This is manifested in increased vulnerability and growing financial strain in paying for housing. This cost overrun, or paying more than households can afford, is even greater for households below the poverty line and even greater for those with dependent children.

These conditions have serious effects on children's well–being and future, and call into question the scope and effectiveness of numerous international and national legal documents that refer to child protection and the right to housing as objectives to be met.

The aim of this article is to analyse the economic overload suffered by households in which children live in Spain, focusing mainly on the situation of child poverty and the housing problem as characteristic features of the country. A descriptive analysis of statistical sources from the National Institute of Statistics and Eurostat, among others, is used for this purpose.

The contextualisation of the analysis problem within the framework of the right to housing is based on a doctrinal methodology. Some policies aimed at improving the situation of households with dependent children and the General State Budget 2023 have also been analysed in order to measure potential advances.
