Structural factors in the chronification of homelessness: A view beyond aporophobic meritocracy

Keywords: homelessness, chronicity, aporophobia, meritocracy, long-term homelessnes

Abstract

This article aims to establish to what extent; personal choices or structural factors are responsible for the chronification of homelessness in Spain. Using data from the INE's Homelessness Survey (National Institute of Statistics) (2022), we classify the variables into these two categories and perform a logistic regression to generate an explanatory model. The results show an explanatory primacy of structural variables related to the type of resources and methodologies of the care system, age and health.
