The mesocratic ideal since the Great Recession: a systematic review of the Spanish case

Keywords: social stratification, middle classes, economic crisis, social exclusion, job insecurity, housing situation

Abstract

The material and discursive aspects on which the notion of the middle class was configured seem to have been transformed. So much so that it is worth asking whether this mesocratic ideal could be maintained today. This review aims to find out the scientific approach to these transformations in the wake of the Great Recession and the Covid-19 crisis, the repercussions of which could shake this social stratum, traditionally far removed from social exclusion. A total of 2,225 articles were found in databases such as Web of Science and Scopus, among others. After evaluation and screening, a total of 21 articles were obtained for inclusion. It was found that the study of the issue focuses on the effects of the economic crisis and the labour crisis, as well as on the housing situation.
