Social cohesion: a shared commitment between the European Union and Latin America to tackle the inequality and to achieve the aims of the Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract
Social and territorial cohesion has been one of the pillars of European construction, both in Community and national policies. This hallmark is also present in the European Union’s cooperation with other regions, with special emphasis on Latin America. This article invites to reflect on this guiding role of social cohesion. First, it tackles the current situation in both regions, proposing a conceptual definition for social cohesion. Secondly, it reviews the bi-regional commitment between the European Union and Latin America, in the light of one of their emblematic cooperation programmes: EUROsociAL+, an instrument that promotes and strengthens public policies that drive social cohesion and reduce inequalities. Finally, it looks at social cohesion from the perspective of the 2030 Agenda and the sustainable development goals.
