Abstract
This article looks at the current situation and the future of volunteering in Europe. We begin by thinking back to 2011 and the European Year of Volunteering and examine in some detail the recommendations which were made then. We then cover the various ways in which the European Union supports volunteering for a range of people of all ages. We finish by looking forward to the potential for volunteering in the future and its role in supporting and defending the European values of solidarity, equality, active citizenship and social justice.
