"Y en vuestra venida no haya falta": the construct of femininity in the "call letters"
Abstract
Through the “call letters”, the private correspondence included in the boarding licenses, in which Spaniards residing in America claimed the presence of their wives, relatives and friends, this article aims to address, from a gender perspective, the female experience of the voyage to the Indies. We will analyze its organization, the discourses slipped in these letters that reveal the incorporation, or not, of the norms that affected the relations between the sexes and, finally, the reflection in this correspondence of individual trajectories marked by the need to apprehend new worlds and to widen the limits of action in which they had moved in their homeland of origin.
