Prevalence of methicillin resistant staphylococcus in UEX-Veterinary Teaching Hospital
Abstract
Methicillin resistance is an emerging zoonotic problem due to the direct or indirect contact between humans and animals, so veterinary staff and other workers in contact with animals are exposed to increased risk of infection. Because of its health and zoonotic importance, the Unit of Infectious Diseases at Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Extremadura (HCV-UEX) has developed a work with the main objective to compare the prevalence of mecA gene responsible for methicillin resistance in workers in contact with animals and other working staff of the UEX. The results of this study confirm the increased prevalence of this gene in animal hospital workers, which poses a serious threat to public health.
