Effect of breed and photoperiod on semen production of five Spanish endangered indigenous chicken breeds
Abstract
Domestic breed disappearance has caused a huge loss of biodiversity, which is a serious concern today. The use of a very small number of commercial lines for industrial poultry production has caused the loss of many indigenous breeds; so it is imperative to address conservation strategies, highlighting germplasm bank establishment. In the present study we have assessed the quantitative and qualitative sperm parameters of five endangered indigenous chicken breeds according to photoperiod. Results show that roosters of studied breeds are markedly seasonal, occurring also racial differences. This study provides valuable information for the design of specific strategies for each breed in conservation programs.
