Does the catnip deserve its name?
Abstract
The Nepeta cataria (NC) is a plant belonging to the family of the mints, worldwide known by its effect over feline behavior due to its similarity to pheromones. This is related to one of its contents: the nepetalactone. It helps relaxation, although there are cases in which some animals might show an aggressive and activating response. By a review of the published researches over the properties of this plant, we look for the demonstration of its action as a feline behaviour alterative. Some of these properties have not been proved yet, as it is its relaxing effect on cats or its effect over penile erection in rats; while some others, such as its analgesic use or its repellent action, are “unused”, however they seem to have scientific basis. The researches already made over this herb’s properties aren’t enough and it’s necessary to make clear its action mechanisms over the animals’ nervous system.Downloads
