Abstract

Serious diseases like cancer can be experienced as traumatic and/or as opportunity to make positive life changes (ex., posttraumatic growth). The positive group psychotherapy program for cancer survivors integrates both elements, trauma and growth. The program aims are not only reducing negative emotions (emotional distress or post-traumatic symptoms) but work with positive emotions and facilitation of posttraumatic growth. Psychotherapeutic work items that have shown evidence in achieving these objectives are reflected in the modules to encourage expression and emotional processing, emotional regulation skills training and coping strategies, facilitating post-traumatic growth and confrontation with the existential and spiritual issues that arise after diagnosis and cancer treatment. Besides this psychotherapeutic works we implement other relevant factors in psychosocial adjustment after treatment as promoting: healthy lifestyles, adherence to cancer treatment, the reemployment and social supportive behaviors. Preliminary results from the program show greater reduction of posttraumatic symptoms and increased posttraumatic growth in positive psychotherapy program at 3 months follow up when compared to a previous program focused only on reducing emotional distress.
