Abstract

The most frequent psychological sequelae in survivors of a pediatric cancer are depression, due to a low self-esteem and difficulties for social relationship, anxiety, social phobia and post-traumatic stress. These emotional disturbs are chronic or get consolidated when achieving adulthood. There are important consequences for their social and laboral integration. Physical sequelae and dysfunctions secondary to toxicity related to treatment or previous disease are also important. Therefore there is a need to perform longitudinal studies that let us early detect and treat those psychopatological and functional abnormalities in order to achieve their “global cure”. We intend to justify the necessity of a long-term follow up clinic for pediatric cancer survivors, in the Pediatric Oncology Unit La Fe Children’s Hospital in order to know the consequences of these treatments in our population and to develop clinical guides to solve those health problems.
