Marital functionality as an associated factor with different strategies for coping with breast cancer
Abstract
Objective: the partner is considered the first social support in breast cancer, it alleviates the impact of the condition by making feel loved, supported, and accompanied, thus facilitating coping, social integration, and psychological well-being. Therefore, the objective of this study is to determine the marital functionality as an associated factor with the different coping strategies in breast cancer. Method: cross-sectional analytical association study in women with the diagnosis of breast cancer treated in the oncology department from Querétaro, Mexico. Two groups were formed a) with marital functionality and b) without marital functionality, measured through the Chavez Velazco scale. The strategies for coping were evaluated through the Coping Strategies Inventory. The statistical analysis included Chi-square and Odds Ratio. Results:
Adaptive coping strategies predominated in the group with marital functionality (p<0.001), being
the main one in social support at 79.2% (p<0.001), in the group with marital dysfunction social
withdrawal predominated at 72% (p<0.001). Conclusions: The coping strategy of “emotional
expression” had the greatest association strength for with marital functionality. Marital functioning
is strongly associated with adaptive coping strategies.
