ESP A Two-step metasynthesis of thematic research on emotion regulation in cancer patients
Abstract
Objective: To carry out a thematic metasynthesis (a type of qualitative meta-analysis) on the emotional regulation strategies used by cancer patients. Methods: In the first step, thirtysix themes from eighteen thematic studies on emotion regulation and cancer published in the last 25 years were selected and analyzed deductively; in a second step, higher-order themes were constructed through inductive thematic analysis. Results: most themes from the primary studies were coded as situation selection. The model of emotion regulation commonly used in quantitative research did not fully capture the complexity of patients’ experiences, so interpersonal themes were incorporated and organized into higher-order categories. Conclusions: thematic metasynthesis provides an organized overview of qualitative research and complements quantitative research on emotion regulation in psycho-oncology.
