Abstract
Within the Warsaw Pact, not all members had the same strategic relevance in the organisation’s military plans in case of a confrontation with NATO. This article attempts to demonstrate how the different strategic military importance that the communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe had within the Pact was embodied in the grade of “tolerance” and in the margin of manoeuvres that the USSR conceded to one or other States. This had highly important consequences in those countries during the Cold War years, consequences that were prolonged until today and which are fundamental to being able to understand and analyse their political development, not just in the past, but also in the present.Downloads
