Abstract

The authors analyze the labour market evolution in Spain since the accession in the European Union, where neoliberal policies control which last goal will be legitimize a regressive turn in social policies and employment with the message of macroeconomic stability. This is evident since the Maastricht Treaty, which has been accompanied with cutting of social services. Spain became the country with the higher temporality rates, lower salaries and more flexible labour market, which especially affects women. This article informs about how Welfare States are doing the reform processes to maintain the status quo. The authors plead for increasing rates of employment for women in order to guarantee the system sustainability in the long-term and the introduction of a “virtuos circle” of bigger employment, equity and welfare, though this goal, they say, is out of the question in Spain where the dominant elites are enthusiastic with the more liberal economic orthodoxy.
