Abstract

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the loss of value of the automobile industry in the Greater ABC Paulista, Brazil, which was the engine of Brazilian economic growth prior to the economic and financial liberalization of the 1990s. Based on historical-structural methodology, in the Latin American tradition of center and periphery studies, it is evident that in the last three decades, the region has undergone a productive reconfiguration, in which the automotive industry has shrunk considerably, not only because of domestic economic crises, but also due to governance decisions in the value chains of the major foreign automakers.
