Global food crisis, possible local solutions: traditional crops, in La Plata, Argentina
Abstract
Food is a right and one of the basic needs of humanity. However, we are currently facing a food crisis that jeopardizes the adequate satisfaction of this need. This is because on a global scale, food production is based on an extractivist production model, associated with 'modern' consumption habits, which have a negative impact on the environment, health and even on the cultural identities of the territories. However, throughout the world there are different experiences that, in the form of resistance, confront it. The platense horticulture belt -Argentina- can be taken as an example of this. In this text, we present the case of amaranth and local horticultural varieties, and analyze how this type of crops - normally called traditional - contribute to a more environmentally friendly agriculture, as well as to a more respectful consumption of cultural aspects, conditions necessary for sustainable feeding.
