Abstract

The modern tendency to conceive Rome as a civilization that precedes the creation of travel and tourism as well as hospitality seems to be unquestionable. Even though this wave is illustrative it lacks of scientific basis and should to be revisited. The present essay is aimed at exploring historically to what extent ancient Romans made their practices of leisure and the role played by travels as a form of rationale linkage throughout the boundaries of oikoumene. In addition, we will examine as well the influences exerted by Roman archetype in Spain and posterior conquest of America with end of the political manipulation of foreign lands. Ultimately, it is necessary to understand the emergence of modern travel during XIX and XX centuries as a result of the convergence between the knowledge quest and the need of escape inherited to industrialized societies.
