Abstract

In order to put forward and explain Marx’s conception of society and history, Althusser imported the concept of “overdetermination” from Freud’s psychoanalysis. It is not the purpose of this paper to make a genealogy of the concept. Otherwise, the objective of the followings lines is to think about the theoretical consequences (to historical and social knowledge) of using the idea of overdetermination. In other words, and according to French’s author words, we try to describe the conception of society and history which “is reflected” in Marxist’s category of overdetermination.
