Abstract

This work is focused on the features concerning the characterization of ground motion in a given site, which follows to the hazard assessment and becames the conclusion of these studies. It begins with an explanation of the parameters and representation ways most commonly used to characterize the ground motion in the site nf the structures to be designed, which vAlí be later introduced in the dynamic calculations of these. Regarding the type of representation, some considerations are made on the relevance of frequency content of the motion in the damage degree suffered by the stmcture. This is the reason for which the response spectrum is the most generalized representation of movement. Nevertheless, other parameters are examined which tend to be used complementarily, combining information both of the amplitudes and frequencies of motion. We also show the antecedents and the current state of the art in the estimation of parameters and spectra, once the characteristics of the expected motions have been determined by means of hazard studies. Ihe paper concludes with an account of how the problem is approached in Seismic Building Codes, with a specific analysis of the treatment followed by the NCSE-94, the Eurocode n.0 8 and the Nuclear Normative. 1.
